Disney Now & Then: Fashion

Hi there magical ones!
I’m Erika. I practically grew up at Disneyland, then the minute I turned 18, I ended up working there. I worked at Disneyland for about 5 years, and I even got to work at Radio Disney for a little bit before moving to New York to pursue my dreams of theatre. Since I no longer work at Disneyland and I live all the way on the other side of the country from it, I don’t visit Disneyland as often as I’d like to. In fact, my last visit was approximately 4 years ago (what?!! I know, right?) So, let’s just say…a lot has changed since I’ve worked in the parks.

I was lucky enough to work in multiple departments at the Resort and in multiple areas so I had a great understanding of the Disney culture while I was there. Here’s where I worked!

DISNEY’S CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE

*Character Host

DISNEYLAND

*Character Host-everywhere
*Shows: Toontown Morning Madness (citizen of toontown), Jedi Training Academy (padawan)
*Interactive Host-Innoventions
*Ride Operator: Snow White, Pinocchio, Dumbo, Casey Jr.

Now that I’m on the outside looking in, I’ve had a chance to see what’s changed at the parks, and you can learn with me as a part of the DISNEY NOW & THEN series! This week, let’s start with my favorite…fashion!

tumblr_nk5fr531C51qj9wxoo1_540

As a kid, I loved dressing up as Alice in the parks. The older I got, my love of dressing up grew even stronger, but I couldn’t necessarily walk into Disneyland in a full-blown costume. I mean, could you imagine if I was allowed to dress up as Tinkerbell? I already have platinum blonde hair, and if there was a little kid visiting Disneyland for the first time ever, they would assume I was Tinkerbell if I was walking around with blonde hair and a green dress and wings. They might even look past the fact that I don’t remotely look like Tink. Which is a huge reason why costumes aren’t allowed…to avoid confusion. Because let’s face it…if a little kid asked for my autograph, of course I would say yes!

So, as of a couple years ago, here’s where we stood in terms of fashion: The little kids got to dress up in costume daily if they liked. A 5-year-old could dress up like Snow White, and a little boy could be Captain Hook. Meanwhile, all of the devoted AP’s and cast members who hung out at Disneyland after work were stuck wearing jeans and t-shirts and had no way to show our true love of Disney. And then came the magical Leslie Kay. She loved pulling together different Disney inspired ensembles for her trips to the Disney parks, but she was thinking outside the box. She wasn’t just wearing an Ariel shirt. She was pulling together the colors that remind someone of Ariel and using the colors to generate an entire outfit. And that was the birth of Disney Bounding.

Disney Bounding is not only totally allowed at the Disney Parks, but it has brought together the Disney fans of my generations and connected us with the older and younger generations as we all share in the same passion. Disney Bounding is a way to wear to Disney inspired outfits in everyday life whether you’re at the park or at work. Amazing idea, right? And it doesn’t end with well-known characters such as Belle or Snow White. The more creative you are, the better. Some folks love to challenge themselves to wearing outfits inspired by different lands such as Fantasyland, or different characters of the Disney franchise such as Kermit the frog. If you’ve never Disneybounded, you have to try it out. You’ll feel amazing from the inside out. This is a photo of my first Disneybound. Can you guess who inspired my outfit? This is me on my 30th birthday at Walt Disney World.

You can learn more about Disneybounding and get some inspiration by visiting Leslie Kay’s blog: disneybound.tumblr.com.

While Disneyland has already kicked off their 60th Diamond Celebration, the official 60th birthday for Disneyland is on July 17th. There are going to be quite a few meetup groups in the park that day devoted to dressing in the style of park goers in 1955. The current king of vintage dress at the Disney Parks, is an event known as Dapper Day. The idea of Dapper Day, is to dress stylish for the park. Throw on a pair of heels or a polka dot dress or even a suit. Be fashionable and have fun. ‘Dapper’ can mean many things and while some interpret it as dressing in vintage wear to emulate guests attending the park in the 50’s, it can mean a variety of things such as fashionable, chic contemporary or vintage classics. Dapper Day started off as a meetup at Disneyland park where guests could dress up and take a photo in front of the castle together or meetup to ride certain attractions together. Dapper Day has now expanded due to popularity to include yearly meetups in Paris, California and Florida (California includes a car show and expo). All of the info pertaining to the events is at dapperday.com.

Back when I worked at Disneyland, they didn’t have Dapper Day. The closest thing that existed, was you could throw on your heels and go swing dancing in the evening at Carnation Plaza. There was a wonderful nostalgia to it and only a small group of people seemed to know about it, so it felt exclusive, however I love the idea that there are as many fans of dressing up as myself and events to support this love. I’m thrilled to say that I’ll be back in California for all 3 days of D23 Expo 2015, and I have my Disneybound outfits all picked out (I promise I’ll reveal them soon), and I can’t wait to go back to Disneyland sporting the latest in Disney fashions. Comment your favorite outfit to wear to Disneyland!

Disney Fashion: Hot Topic Finds Jan 2015

Photo Shoot Jan. 18 030

Got this cute Belle dress there for $22!

I don’t think it would shock anyone to know I shop at Hot Topic. Not that my style screams what you’d expect to find in there, but because, by looking at me and picturing me shopping at a Mall, well, where else could you see me walking in to?

The funny thing is, beside plugs and some retro-style dresses, I usually only go in there to buy Disney things. Did you know they have an entire section dedicated to it? You can find dresses, shirts, hair accessories, and bags galore! They have a variety of different styles, too. You can find princesses drawn in a more pin-up, tattooed style, AND characters done more on the classic side, depending on your tastes. They also have variety when it comes to clothing styles. They don’t only have classic fit t-shirts with characters that you are likely to find in the Disney parks, but they actually have uniquely patterned dresses and cutesy, stylish trends as well.

The prices aren’t half bad either. You could throw together an entire Disney-themed outfit there for under $100. The biggest reason for this is because, much like Kohl’s, not only is everything in the store always individually marked down, but there’s also usually an overall sale, like buy 1 get 1 for $1 or everything is 10 % off.

Let’s go crazy and make an outfit completely The Little Mermaid themed. So, here is a dress, bag, shoes, jewelry, and hair accessories all for under $100.

The dress:

I like this one because it’s subtle from afar, then up close you realize how utterly adorable it is – $27.60

hottopic2

The shoes:

Let’s go with combat boots here. They have Ariel slip ons too, but these combat boots make combat boots 324067 times cooler: $40

hottopic1

The hair:

You’ve got to add a bow here. I actually highly recommend checking out hair bows on Etsy.com instead of buying one here because there are a lot of sellers on there doing really unique stuff at similar prices! $5.20

hottopic3

The necklace:

Kiss the girl necklace – $8.40

hottopic4

The bag:

This bag is great for the parks; over the shoulder and big enough to fit a bunch of stuff. Hot Topic even has some awesome backpacks (one of which I have and is Ariel themed, but it is sold out!) So, here’s this Ariel hobo-bag instead! – $18.00

hottopic5

So all that for $99! And like I said, there’s usually a sale going on, so you could probably even add in these tights for $11.60 and still be just under $100!

hottopic6What do you think? Did you know Hot Topic had things like this? I would love to read what you have to say in the comments below!

Disney Fashion

hauntedmansionoutfitI wouldn’t call myself a “fashionista,” but thinking about Disney fashion, especially in terms of Disney-Bounding is something that has really interested me over the past couple years. It even inspired me to open up my own Etsy shop for Disney hair accessories! Josh asked me a few weeks ago what type of article series I was thinking about writing for the new year, and the first thing that popped into my head was doing something based on Disney fashion. Again, fashion isn’t something I necessarily know a lot about, I mean, I’ve watched America’s next top model and What Not to Wear, but that hardly qualifies me… But it’s a subject I would like to explore more, and if you’ll join me on the journey in this new blog series, I hope you can find some useful and fun things, too!

The idea for this blog reaches far and wide. I will basically be exploring not only what the Disney Store might have to offer as far as clothing and make-up, but I will also be featuring other independent creators who make their own Disney fashion and accessories, other stores that may sell licensed items, and just how you can put outfits together from your own closet in a more subtly-Disney way!

So, I hope you will join me in this new venture, I think it will be lots of fun!

New Items in Angie’s Etsy Shop and Disney Hair Accessory Photoshoot

I’ve been really getting a lot of my artwork and things in my Etsy store sold so I wanted to get the ball rolling on getting some more product up in my shop since the Holidays are coming up and all. In between working on a few commissioned pieces outside of Etsy, I’ve also been producing some more things to sell in my Etsy shop. Josh took pictures of those things for me because we just got a new camera and he’s been experimenting with it and getting used to it. So, today we did a little photoshoot and I kind of wanted to show it off to everyone, and if you are interested in any of the things you see, we actually have those things and some other handmade items in my Etsy shop right here! My shop’s name is Flipadeeflop, so you can also find it by searching that name on Etsy! (You can click on the images to be brought to the Etsy page if you would like to purchase anything! They make great gifts, especially for someone who has an upcoming trip!)

For all who don’t know, DisneyBounding is a new trend that has sprung up within the Disney fan base. Thanks to people like Leslie Kay (You can hear her on Modern Mouse Radio HERE!) and many others, the trend has become part of the #DisneySide promotion that Disney is running with this year. Summing up the trend is quite simple: dress in the colors of your favorite characters in a fashionable way. Check out the pictures in the post to get an even better idea.

DisneyBounding is a fun way to enjoy the parks and show off your Disney side. This past year we saw tons of photos of people doing it for Halloween, Dapper Day, and on any other day of the year. It is something that anyone can do and if you have the chance, we recommend doing it, but I do want to go over some steps to make sure you can jump into the parks as a hipster Ariel without looking a bit off kilter.

Shop Deals: Long before your vacation, be sure to shop online and find the right deals as well as the perfect clothing to be able to pull off your look. Buy something within your budget and shop for deals. That is key in my opinion. Save some money for souvenirs at the park instead of going bankrupt before you even step foot inside the gates of a park.

Be Subtle: Subtlety is very important, unless you love wearing something once then dumping it in a trash bin. Make sure you put together an outfit that you could wear any night out no matter where you are and it wouldn’t look like you found an adult size Peter Pan costume for sale at a thrift store. If you think you can wear it out with friends to a local restaurant without anyone recognizing that you are dressed like Pocahontas, you’ve succeeded.

Be Comfortable: When dressing up for a day at the parks, you have to remember that you are spending countless hours outdoors. You will be walking and standing a good portion of the day. That being said, quality shoes and shoes that are a bit worn are important. Ladies, don’t forget that sometimes the wind picks up so if you are wearing a dress, take into consideration that you don’t want to hold down the bottom half of your dress all day. It may be best to wear some tights underneath. Light jackets are also something to consider as part of your attire. Rain is frequent at any of the parks across the world and you don’t want to be caught in a rainstorm with short sleeves. The same goes for chilly evenings depending on the time of year. If you are drawing inspiration from outfits already put together by other people online, you may want to tweak their ideas to be a little more comfortable – especially when it comes to shoes! (Plus, if you want to read more about dressing comfortable in the parks, we have a whole article on it HERE!)

No matter what reason you decide to dress up in the parks, whether it be an event like Dapper Day, Disney Bounding, getting your Engagement photos taken in the parks, or dressing for a special occasion, all of these guidelines can be applied! All of these tips will help you have a more enjoyable experience in parks and really look like you know exactly what you’re doing without breaking the bank!

Have you ever dressed up for a special occasion in the parks? What was it and how was your experience with it? Leave your answers in the comments below!

A beautiful pavilion….redone?

Direct Download This Episode

“DisneyBounding” has gotten big at the Disney Parks and outside of the parks. Dressing in the style of our favorite Disney characters has become something of a staple, even becoming part of Disney’s campaign for #DisneySide. So we got in depth with the creator of the DisneyBound phenomenon, Leslie Kay, as well as set up our latest Armchair Imagineer episode.

We discuss Epcot’s Imagination pavilion and give our ideas on what could spruce up the attraction that opened in Epcot during it’s first year of operation.
