Modern Mouse Radio #79: More Weird Stories from Disney Parks

weird

This week’s episode is the 4th installment of the Weird Stories series we started way back on Modern Mouse Radio #26. Angie and Josh discuss six weird stories this week about what’s happened at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.

Recent news came out that a woman in West Virginia is claiming that the Walt Disney company has planted a chip inside her body and she is suing the company because she has spent too much money at Disney parks.

We took this story and decided to hit the Front Page of the Internet, aka Reddit, for some other stories. There are tons of posts from current or former cast members and we had a blast reading through them. We figured we would pick 5 to go along with the original story for this episode!

Top 5: Awesome Things You Didn’t Know About Panchito Pistoles

It’s no real secret that I’m a big fan of The Three Caballeros. I don’t know why but I am. I grew up watching the movie all the time. I love the music. I love the weird animation. Most importantly to me, I love the characters. Donald was always one of my favorites. I’ve aalways had admiration for Jose Carioca. In recent times, I’m falling for the coolness of Panchito Pistoles.  When animators made The Three Caballeros, Panchito was the only one that hadn’t appeared in a previous film and had to be made up. He was given simple yet cultural traits that would best fit the character for a global audience. So here are my top 5 awesome things you didn’t know about one of my favorite characters in Disney history, Panchito Pistoles!

panchito

#5-Longest Name of any Disney Character. Culturally, the Mexican people have longer names as they carry their father and mother’s last names. Panchito’s last name would traditionally be Quintero Gonzalez. His full name is actually Panchito Romero Miguel Junipero Francisco Quintero Gonzalez III. That’s a pretty long name but not out of the ordinary for someone from Mexico. It’s a tiny detail added into the film to make a reference to traditions.

#4-Only Package Film with an Attraction in Florida. The Mexico pavilion  at Epcot currently boasts the only “Package Film” attraction in Walt Disney World. When the Magic Kingdom was first built, Fantasyland had Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. That attraction boasted the same, but when Mr. Toad made way for a Winnie the Pooh attraction and the Mexico Pavilion in Epcot got a revamp with a Three Caballeros makeover, Panchito can now make that claim. Of course, he shares screen time with Donald and Jose too! I just love this little fact.

panchito 1

#3-Panchito’s Pistolas. In Spanish, words are either female or male. Hand gun or pistol is a female word and is normally spelled Pistolas, but I would assume animators either didn’t know or used an “e” instead to make Panchito’s nickname easier to pronounce.

#2-In Love with Clara Cluck. It’s never referenced in any short cartoon or film, but in comic strips and later comic books, Panchito is in love with Clara Cluck, the operatic singing hen from “The Little Hen”. That short is also the debuting for Donald. Clara pops up here and there in other things, but her claim to fame is “The Little Hen”. It’s also fitting that a rooster would fall in love with a chicken so I guess this isn’t overly surprising, but it is something you don’t see or hear about much.

Museum remembers 'Aztec Eagles'

#1-Air Force Panchito. The U.S. Air Force called one of it’s B-25J planes Panchito as it painted the character on the nose of the plane. It fought in battle during World War II and was later built again only to now be part of a air show called Rag Wings and Radials.

Do you have something I don’t know about Panchito or The Three Caballeros altogether? This Top 5 completes my other two on Donald and Jose so this will close out my Three Caballeros posts…until I find something else to write about them!

Tweets From Tuesday: Best Disney Deluxe Resort?

twitter

First of all, let me point out that this series has gone from being called “Tweets ON Tuesday” to Tweets FROM Tuesday” as I am changing this to being posted either the night of Tuesday or on Wednesday. I’m currently working a bunch on Modern Mouse Boutique and the that I’m, at times, not able to get to this article on Tuesday night. That being said, lets get into this weeks tweets!

I’m heading down to Orlando in two weeks and this will be my first time staying at a resort other than Pop Century or one of the All Star resorts. Despite my lack of staying at any upscale resort, I do love visiting the deluxe resorts and have been to most of them. I know I’m not the only one that enjoys spending time at these great hotels so I put the question out to everyone as to which resort they would want to stay at or visit and why. These were your answers from Twitter!

: My current favorite deluxe is Animal Kingdom Lodge. It’s quiet, I love the theme, the music, the CMs, and the smells from the restaurants. But my current “wish” is the Grand Floridian. It just has this extravagance about it that I love. Admittedly, I’m a hotel snob. I’ll admit that I’m snobby about most things, but I’ve never been snobby about Disney hotels. As long as it’s clean and pleasant, which they all are, I tend to be fine, but I would love to stay at either Animal Kingdom Lodge or Grand Floridian. I’d like to walk around Grand Floridian in a bath robe with some champagne. Is that a bad dream?

: The Polynesian is my number 1 choice. I think the Poly has the nostalgia factor as well as the romance. Plus it has the Monorail. I’m on board with all of this. The Polynesian has been my dream hotel since I was a kid. It has great food, great ambiance, and it’s directly across from that darn castle!

: Poly. It’s was the most magical time I have ever had at a deluxe resort (AKL and WL excluded). I have yet to experience staying at one of these but I would probably not pick the Polynesian as my first. I’m all about the Boardwalk right now. That will probably be my first deluxe!

: AK Lodge. Not been, but sent a coworker based on love for it & he said it was lame. Luckily, he’s an idiot! I’ve advised many people to stay on property but some people just don’t get it. They see the whole experience as strange. It’s Disney World! It’s different than staying at the Hilton! I understand your pain.

: Contemporary, a monorail goes through the hotel!!!! Come one! I would have said Animal Kingdom Lodge but  said it best after a few days it’d be, “giraffe again….” Funny enough, my least favorite resort is the Contemporary. I think it’s super cool that the monorail goes right through it but at the end of the day I think that is all it has going for it. To be fair, I have never stayed there nor have I ever eaten there or stayed for too long a period of time. I’m sorry to comedian Jim Gaffigan, I would rather pick the Animal Kingdom Lodge.

: The Wilderness Lodge is so beautiful! You have Hoop-Dee-Doo Revue or can walk to the petting zoo and fake geysers. Now that is awesome! I’m from Colorado and I know a great lodge when I see one. This is a wonderful place. Despite it being in the middle of Florida there is something about it that takes you to the rugged West. If we are comparing, I really like the Grand Californian over The Wilderness Lodge but they are in two separate states so we won’t make that comparison!

Thanks to those of you that got involved in this week’s Tweets From Tuesday! If you want to be a part of any future installment, please follow me on Twitter and when I post my question on Tuesdays (it’s pretty much all I post) be sure to answer back!

Modern Mouse Radio #78: Armchair Imagineers w/ Big Fat Panda

parade

We return to our signature series, Armchair Imagineers, this week with guest John Saccheri aka Big Fat Panda. Before the guys get into discussing this weeks Imagineering topic, they get to know John and we hear about how he got into Disney and when he first visitid Walt Disney World. We talk about the origins of the Big Fat Panda name and the highlights that he has had from doing his show on YouTube, including an appearance by Keith! We also get into a few discussions about Trader Sams’ Grog Grotto, being a Disney YouTuber, and meeting some cool people while making his dreams come true.

Then we get into the bulk of the ideas. Armchair Imagineering is a fake way for us to get creative and think of some great additions to the parks. Since John is from the Walt Disney World area, we stick with that area. Everyone was given the challenge to come up with a new parade and stick it into one of the theme parks, water parks, or Downtown Disney. There is no monetary ceiling. Since we are just playing, no limits were put onto anyone except that this parade had to make sense and fit into one of the parks.

We start off with Keith who brings up Disney’s Theatrical Productions. Being from New York, Keith has seen several of the shows and would like to see a parade showcasing some of the numbers from these Broadway shows including The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Mary Poppins. He’s been on a high from seeing Newsies so he would like to see it at the tale end of his parade in a big closing number!

John brings the idea of a fully themed Haunted Mansion nighttime parade at Liberty Square. We can see the mansion off in the distance as Madame Leota, Master Gracey, and even the portraits come to life. Floats, music, and projections all get brought up to celebrate one of Walt Disney’s crowning achievements and the last attraction he himself worked on.

Josh brings back up the idea of a Broadway style production taking over Disney’s Streets of America. Josh doesn’t focus just on the Disney productions but classic Broadway as well. He brings in show numbers from Annie and Little Shop of Horrors as well as Aladdin and Newsies. Using the street atmosphere is key for Josh as we see people opening up windows and doors to sing songs and dancing on rooftops.

We want to thank John for joining the show this week. Be sure to check out his website (www.BigFatPanda.com) as well as his and pages!
