Tweets on Tuesday: Live Action Remakes?
Disney’s Maleficent, regardless of your opinion of the film, was a big smash hit for the Walt Disney company last year and with that in mind, Disney has greenlit several live action film adaptations of their classic animated films. We just saw the release of Cinderella and we can look forward to upcoming live action films like The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, Dumbo, another stupid Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland film, and the just announced Mulan. I have mixed feelings, but I’m not sure if I’m the only one that feels like that. I enjoyed Cinderella but I didn’t care for Maleficent. In that same vein I don’t know if I will like or hate the upcoming Disney live action remakes. So I opened it up to Twitter and asked what movies they don’t want to see end up being Disney live action remakes to see if they like this idea or hate it. Here is what everyone said!
: all, I think it’s stupid to just remake and reboot everything and that’s what these are. Just come up with original ideas. So you may not want to hear me say that Disney animation studios is looking to make theatrical sequels to many of their latest films including Frozen, Wreck It Ralph, and Big Hero 6?
: leave the Aristocats in the corner and animated where nobody notices it. We all saw what happened with 101 Dalmatians….Glenn Close is a great actress but I’m in agreement that the live action 101 Dalmations and the two sequels that followed will never touch the original animated film.
: Lion King. I don’t think singing lions transfers well to the real world. Would they have CGI lips? Either CGI lips or full on CGI lions! Both are scary and Disney already made a Disney Nature film about lions so please let Lion King be. How epic would a live action Mufasa death scene be though huh?
: any – after the horror that was Maleficient they should stop. Obviously you haven’t seen Cinderella which was pretty good, but Maleficent definitely stunk for me.
: The Rescuers would be so much CGI that it would be mostly animated anyway. This goes for what was said about the Lion King too. I would like to see a goofy albatross flying with two mice in a tin can on it’s back. Maybe that’s just some weird thing I’d like to see though.
: I’m for most of these remakes, but if I had one choice that isn’t happening ATM… “Pocahontas”. Like “Mulan”, the actual mythos of “Pocahontas” streams too mature for a Disney’s re-telling. Unlike “Mulan” though, they haven’t officially considered said option, so I’d definitely stick with “Pocahontas” there. This is probably more true than most would like to admit. Disney can’t take as many historical liberties in the live action world without some backlash from someone. Stories of underage girls with older men and brutal wars between Natives and Europeans isn’t really that Disney.
: All of them, except ‘The Black Cauldron’. The source material should be reconsidered, assuming Disney still has the rights. You might be onto something there but if Black Cauldron was a scary animated film, I could only imagine a live action tale. Probably not something Disney wants to remake. They would rather forget they made that film.
: Robin Hood, Pinocchio, Aladdin, Lion King just what I can think of right now. I can probably guarantee Aladdin being made whether or not you’d like to see it. I’m sure a Robin Hood animal film won’t be made and the story has been done on film so many times it’s rediculous. I don’t think Lion King can be an option but I do remember that Jonathon Taylor Thomas was in a Pinocchio live action film in the 1990s and it wouldn’t surprise me if Disney wanted to make that film now.
: Up, The Aristocats, Lady and the Tramp, And to flip it, I would not want a fully animated Mary Poppins. All of these movies I would be in complete agreement with. I don’t think the world is ready to see a live action Kevin but I might want to see two real life dogs eating pasta and accidentally kissing.
: Cinderella, Jungle Book, Dumbo, Alice in Wonderland….oh wait! seriously, not gonna be a fan of a live action Aristocats. Like I said, I’m on the fence for many of these films. I remember the live action Jungle Book film from the 1990s and it was weird, but if they don’t go over the top and have singing CGI bears, I’m fine with that. I really enjoyed Cinderella! I don’t know if I can even witness Johnny Depp dancing in another Wonderland movie, and Dumbo sounds like an awful idea from the start. I think I will also put Aristocats in the same category as Dumbo. An awful idea from the start.
: Toy Story I think i would be freaked out for days. Oh my god! Just thinking about it creeps me out. No thanks! This is some Stephen King stuff I don’t think my nightmares can handle.

Tweets on Wednesday: Favorite Disney Villain?
I’ve always been a big fan of Disney villains. At times, the villains have been cooler than the protagonists. I attribute that to the personalities they get to voice these characters as well as the writing team because they do a phenomenal job with making the bad guys so likeable. Anyways, I’m always curious to hear who everyone likes because everyone has different opinions on what makes someone bad and who is more sympatheic as a villain. So I opened it up to Twitter and here is everyone’s answer!
: Maleficent, not only because she is the Mistress of All Evil, but who can deny her villainous charm? She is drawn and acted out in a way that is very charming. If you didn’t know better, you may end up liking her before she cursed you or something!
: Definitely Ursula. Always loved her, but loved her even more when I found out she was inspired by Norma Desmond. I’ve always liked the drag queen tidbit and Ursula is such a perfect antagonist to Ariel who isn’t jaded like she is. She gets how life really is.
: The Headless Horseman! He is the only villain that actually scared me! This is one of my favorite films and he truly is frightening. I’d completely agree with this.
: Captain Hook is a great role model. No matter how many times he gets shut down by Peter Pan or Jake, he never gives up! To think of it, he really is a great role model! He’s also quite a charmer with the ladies!
: Cruella de Vil! Hires people to kill 99 puppies so she could wear them. That’s evil. I’m a big lover of puppies so yes! She also has the best villain name and theme song.
: Mother Gothel – she is the nastiest. Her psychological terrorism is so cruel. No one is more bad ass. Gothel is someone who I could see being a real person more than any of the other villains. Someone who plays mind games to get what they need. Probably happens far more often than someone killing 99 puppies.
: Pete. Old school. I do love Pete, but he did get softer as time went on. Did anyone watch Goof Troop of The Goofy Movie? He seems pretty chill now.
: Doctor Facilier because he’s the shadow man with friends on the other side. I would probably rank this on the top of my list. That New Orleans voodoo creeps me out and to have a character that uses that black magic is scary.
: too many:Cruella de Vil, Edgar the butler, Disco Yeti, Evil Eisner (Communicore Weekly musical). But I’ll go w/ King Candy. Go ahead and plug Communicore Weekly because we are great friends with George and Jeff. I love the musical and the Evil Eisner robot they go to battle with. Not technically Disney villain though. King Candy however is a Disney Villain and he is one I don’t normally think about. Maybe his alter ego, Turbo, is scarier, but King Candy seems like a weird guy my dad would be friends with and I wouldn’t like.
That’s all this week. Thanks to those of you who shared your opinions! If you want to be a part of next week’s Twitter question be sure to follow me on Twitter by clicking the link below. You can also continue this conversation by leaving a comment down below to let me know who your favorite villain is.

The Whole Picture: Perri
Up to this point, Walt Disney’s True Life Adventure series had done well in both television and theatrical avenues. The nature documentary which Disney had invented was becoming popular with other studios as well. That meant that Walt had to take the next step forward to stay ahead of the game. He decided to make Perri, his next true life tale, a “True Life Fantasy” adapting documentary footage to a story.
Despite the lack of real box office success, Bambi had always been a favorite of Walt. With that understanding, he must have really enjoyed the writing of Felix Salten, the author of Bambi, because this is the first time Disney adapted a second book by the same author. Perri was somewhat of a followup to Bambi about a squirrel of the same name who falls in love with a fellow squirrel named Porro after being saved by a human girl. The story was adapted documentary footage shot in Utah and Wyoming. Over 20,000 feet of footage was shot to put together the film, which actually used less than half of that footage. Animations were tossed in here and there to add to the story, including a cameo from our deer friend Bambi. (See the pun I put in there!)
Unlike other True Life Adventures like Secrets of Life or the Vanishing Prarie, this film doesn’t start with an animated paint brush and map, further seperating the “True Life Fantasy” idea from the other films in the series. The film, however, does bring back narrator Winston Hibler who had narrated the other previous True Life films. He also serves as producer and write songs for Perri, which went on to win an Academy Award for Best Score, it’s only real accomplishment.
The film debuted to a mixed review by critics in August 1957. Critics had once said that Disney’s documentaries created stories instead of simply showing the beauty in which they were filming. Secrets of Life had toned the comedy and stories down which made critics happy, but Perri was at the opposite end of the spectrum. Footage had been manipulated to support the story this time which was disliked by the shakers and movers of the reviewing world.
Despite criticisms, the film did do well at the box office. It was released again in theaters in 1964 and 1972 but has only been available to own once in 2005. The film doesn’t hold up like some of the more serious True Life Adventures that would make way for the eventual Disney Nature films. It stands alone as some weird hybrid of documentary and live action film that doesn’t give us a great enough story to be an adventure but is too fantastical to be a documentary. Luckily, this was the last of Walt Disney’s True Life Fantasy films. I look forward to getting back to the regular documentaries in the future.

Modern Mouse Radio #77: March Magic 2015
Earlier this month (March 2015) Disney put out a bracket of 32 theme park attractinos, 16 from the Disneyland and 16 from Walt Disney World, and is pitting them up against each other once a day for the remainder of the month to crown the people’s champion of attractions.
Keith and josh take the bracket and go through all of the match ups as they fill out their bracket the way they see fit. In case of a tie, Angie joins the show to be able to make that decision so that the bracket is filled out fairly. Hear the results as we choose our champion attraction from the two U.S. Disney parks!
